Successful Failures

There is something to be said about failing. Sure, sometimes failing is not an option, but in many cases its an opportunity to see how to succeed. Oddly enough, it seems we learn a lot through our failures. Thomas Edison went through many revisions when creating the lightbulb. When asked about his unsuccessful findings he responded with, “I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb.”

When applying this to web design or any other field for that matter, I find that certain failures can keep you on edge — a hungry wolf so to speak. This does not mean success in not important, but that success is important when you understand why something is successful. By failing we can clearly analyze what went wrong and can therefore seek to improve these oversights.

Since the creation of Artboy5884.com I have always wanted to design a site that would be featured on Website Design Awards, or CSS Elite. These sites feature astonishing websites designed by some of the best designers around the world. Being featured on those websites would be my personal validation of skill and talent. Unfortunately, each iteration of my personal sites were unsuccessful in joining the ranks of these great designers. I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed, but at least it helps me analyze what I can improve upon.

So being featured on Website Design Awards has continued to elude me. But with each unsuccessful attempt, I succeed in finding what doesn’t work. Gotta keep trying, gotta keep pushing!
